Big Screen Plaza | Robert Wilson: Video Portraits

December 12, 2011 - January 31, 2012

Between 29th and 30th Streets
New York, New York

Big Screen Plaza presents Robert Wilson: Video Portraits, a program curated by Dmitry Komis that focuses on video work Robert Wilson created since 2004. The videos will be presented on the side of 115 West 29th Street at 6th Avenue, the building housing The Watermill Center NYC Studio.

Internationally acclaimed for his avant-garde theater and opera productions, Robert Wilson first created video portraits of well-known personalities in the 1970's with his ground-breaking Video 50, which included an eclectic mix of personalities such as Louis Aragon, Helene Rochas, and a priest, and a duck, to name just a few. The mix of personalities suits Wilson's poetic exploration of movement and gesture and allows for unexpected juxtapositions.

With the Video Portraits, Wilson expands on these themes and uses high-definition technology to push his all encompassing command of lighting and staging. For Wilson, the "Video Portraits can be seen in the three traditional ways that artists construct space. If I hold my hand in front of my face, I can say it is a portrait. If I see my hand at a distance, I can say it is part of a still life, and if I see it from across the street I can say that it is part of a landscape." Ten video portraits, including celebrities, athletes, and animals, will be screened on Big Screen Plaza's outdoor 30 by 16 foot high-definition LED screen on 6th Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets. The opening of Robert Wilson: Video Portraits will take place Monday, December 12, from 5-8 pm, and the program will play at selected times, daily, through January 2012.
