Elastic Electronics: An Insight into Self-Made Instruments with Andreas Hirsch (aka TreeSpeedMusic)

Workshop
March 20, 2010 - 10:00am - 4:00pm

The Watermill Center
39 Watermill Towd Road
Water Mill, New York

In this workshop for 10-12 year olds, Andreas Hirsch offers some insights into techniques for making sound devices, including test recordings of small group improvisations with self-made instruments. Participants will learn how to build a cigar box-style, elastic thumb piano equipped with contact microphones, as well as a circuit-bending transistor radio. Both are fairly easy to make and are great tools for making improvised music. Once one amplifies these instruments, they become surprisingly energetic devices. Please note: Building and amplifying the instruments involves some very basic soldering.

Andreas Hirsch, aka TreeSpeedMusic, is a Cologne-based musician and visual artist. He comes to Watermill with his own peculiar instrument that he has been developing, the Palmonica, an electrified palm tree leaf that produces sounds akin to that of the thumb piano.
