Makram Hamdan
Makram Hamdam Dance Company
Water Mill, New York
Makram Hamdan introduces his new company, Makram Hamdan Dance Company, at an open rehearsal of a new work-in-progress. The choreographic work being explored by Makram Hamdan is based on the traditional Arabic music compositions, maq'am and taqsim. It dissects and reassembles movement as a musical composition, utilizing the virtuosity of the human body as the instrument. Makram explores a kinetic and vibrant amalgam of dance techniques, in tandem with a new music composition by Reuben Butchart. Makram is honored to have dancers Jean Freebury, Oriada Islami, Katharine Livingston, Katherine Nauman, and Nadine Wright performing. The first staged workshop of this piece was initially developed during a residency at the Caldera Arts Center in Sisters, Oregon.
