The Watermill Center invites the public to Saturdays @ WMC for a full day of family activities. To begin the day, Julian Crouch and Saskia Lane return to Watermill for a puppet workshop, teaming up to create extraordinary beauty from ordinary objects: crumpled brown paper, found objects, shadows and a mound of sand. There will be two tours throughout the day giving guests the opportunity to delve deeper into the history of the collection and explore the grounds. Weather permitting, our grounds will be open to the public to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the spring day. In the afternoon, Kembra Pfahler, a staple of the downtown arts scene, brings her alternative teaching methods for Performance Art 101, a workshop adapted from her East Village based performance art school. To close the day, we will host a reception for the opening of prominent visual artist Daniel Arsham’s site-specific installation. The workshops are suitable for all who are willing to play and learn.

2:00 – 3:30pm Performance Art 101 with Kembra Pfahler

Performance Art 101 is a school of thought developed in 2013 by Kembra Pfahler, artist, lead singer and co-founder of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. Inspired by an observed lack of production skills and DIY education in traditional performance practices, this philosophy empowers the performer to create with his or her procurable resources and deconstructs pre-existing hierarchies among artistic mediums.

Performance Art 101 introduces three basic techniques: “availabism” – making the best use of what’s available; “gothleticism” – an urban outdoor DIY work-out routine; and “anti-naturalism” – which, smiliarly to Wabi-Sabi, centers upon on acceptance of transience and imperfection. The ultimate goal of Performance Art 101 is to create beauty out of debris.

In this workshop, Kembra Pfahler will familiarize participants with the tenets and techniques of Performance Art 101. Following a screening of “The Morning Pages,” a short film from The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, Kembra will lead us in stream-of-conscious writing exercises. We will then learn about notebooking, a critical tool in the Performance Art 101 practice, and construct our own personal notebooks. This will be followed by an outdoor balance and meditative activity utilizing colorful balloons. The program will conclude with an exercise in gratitude. This is a fun, all-ages workshop, so all are welcome! Make a reservation HERE

4:00 – 6:00pm Exhibition Opening & Reception: Daniel Arsham

Daniel Arsham brings his multi-disciplinary practice to The Watermill Center directly intervening into the architecture of the building. Opening on April 4 and continuing through early June, Arsham will create a site-specific sculpture similar to his draped, hollow figures. Blending architecture with the visual arts, Arsham transforms surface and space into a visceral interaction between the viewer and the work.
