Justine Kupferman | Evolution of the Human Brain
What gives humans the incredible ability to think, create and imagine? How is the human brain unique? More specifically, what traits have emerged during recent evolution that underlie its cognitive abilities? In this lecture, Dr. Kupferman will discuss recent findings from anthropology, genetics, evolutionary biology, and neuroscience, including her own research on brain development, offering a clearer picture on the history of the human brain.

Justine Kupferman is a post-doctoral research scientist currently working in Franck Polleux’s lab at Columbia University. She is interested in what makes the human brain unique. Her work investigates how recent evolution has led to the emergence of specific traits that endow humans with our exceptional cognitive abilities. She studies genes present only in humans and looks at how these genes control brain development and function, giving us insight into both our cognitive abilities and our vulnerabilities to neuro-developmental disorders. In addition to her research, she teaches extensively and has taught for Columbia’s  Science  Honors  Program  and  the American Museum of Natural History. She is also an avid bird watcher.
