The Byrd Hoffman Watermill Foundation, based in Brooklyn, New York, seeks to develop new approaches to the arts; to provide young people with opportunities for artistic growth;and to document the work of its Artistic Director, Robert Wilson, and his contemporaries. The Foundation pursues this mission within thespirit of innovation encouraged by Wilson in his own work, which blurs genres and encourages interdisciplinary collaborations.
The Foundation's programs include workshops, educational programs, and residencies at The Watermill Center, an international institute for new work in the arts on Long Island's East End; the Robert Wilson Archive, a collection of papers, photos, film, and artifacts documenting the life and work of Wilson and his collaborators; and the Watermill Collection, whose stage pieces, furniture, and art objects focus on aesthetic and formal themes in world art. Director of Development Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development, a newly created position, is responsible for the design, development and implementation of a broad-based fundraising program and endowment campaign to substantially increase philanthropic giving to the Foundation. Working closely with the Board and the Executive Director, he/she is responsible for the strategic leadership and execution of the Foundation's forthcoming endowment campaign and membership program. He/she will also be responsible for supervising institutional grant writing.
Qualifications The successful candidate must possess an appreciation of art and culture and be committed to the Foundation's mission and enthusiastic about its goals and programs. He/she has several years' experience leading a broad-based development program in a major organization. Experience may have been gained in any type of not-for-profit or academic institution, ideally in an arts-related field. Familiarity with the NY philanthropic community and solid capital campaign experience is required. He/she must have a successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major individual donors. Experience with grant writing for major charitable foundations is a plus. It is essential that the Director of Development possess the maturity and personal skills to work effectively with the Artistic Director, staff, Board, donors and friends of the BHWF.
