Maria José Arjona

The work of Colombia-born, Miami-based artist Maria José Arjona reveals a clear interest in artistic process, as well as a fascination with the capacities of the body and an aim to produce new languages. In A line of thought, a line of action, a line of…,which Arjona is creating as a Watermill Center Artist-in-Residence, she continues this exploration, investigating the web of relationships between idea, action, and drawing. In her April residency at Watermill, Arjona is creating daily performances where the body acts as a catalyst, promoter, and executer of a process. In spaces all over the grounds of the Watermill Center, she takes into account lines, objects, and surfaces and works to expand their significance and formal depth, revealing the meaning and power inherent in them. Arjona is documenting the work in photographs that will ultimately be shown, with live performance, in a gallery setting.

Arjona’s performances have been exhibited in El Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertulia (Cali, Colombia), El Museo Del Barrio (New York), Exit Art (New York), Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (Santa Marta, Colombia), Bass Museum Of Art (Miami), Galeria Al CUADRADO (Bogota-COL), Valenzuela & Klenner Gallery (Bogotá, Colombia), The Ballroom Marfa (Marfa, Texas), and Gallery Diet (Miami). Her work has been praised by The New York Times, Art Nexus, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, El Tiempo, Revista Semana, Street, Revista Diners, The Sun Post, and Arte Al Dia International.
