Since the late 1960s, Robert Wilson has enjoyed a meteoric rise as a theater artist and visionary and is now considered a major icon in the artistic landscape. As abundant as it is protean, his work in drawing, video, installation, and photography is fundamental to the whole of his stage productions, both theatrical and operatic. His reputation is well-established, and his presence on the stage and in museums around the world continues unabated.

At the intersection of history and aesthetics, this multidisciplinary event aims to provide an overview that will deepen, renew, and perhaps shift the perception of the Wilsonian universe—without concealing any controversies born from a trademark so charged that it may often overshadow the work itself.

Between lectures, presentations, and testimonies given by some of Wilson’s leading scholars and collaborators, video excerpts of performances and documentary materials—many of which can only be found in the artist’s unpublished archives in New York—will be screened. The dialogue, as in Wilson’s oeuvre, will stand between the acts of looking and listening.

This event is organized by la Bibliothèque publique d’information, pôle Action culturelle et Communication, service de l’Animation. In partnership with l’université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3, l’université de Paris Ouest – Nanterre La Défense, and the Byrd Hoffman Watermill Foundation, New York. With the support of the Regional Council of Île-de-France.
