WATERMILL WORKSHOP: CAPOEIRA WITH LIVE MUSIC
Capoeira is an African-Brazilian martial art that incorporates acrobatics, dance, music, and songs in a rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit.
The 1-hour workshop will involve various warm-ups, drills and sequences along with free practice where two students play against each other using what they have learned. The music involves learning the musical instruments, which are integral to a game of Capoeira, as well as the songs which accompany the music. No prior experience is necessary to begin, everything you need to learn will be taught in class.
Artist-in-Residence Joana P. Cardozo is a Brazilian visual artist based in Los Angeles. Her art practice is rooted in rituals and spirituality, exploring ideas of mortality, domesticity, and identity through photography, mixed media, installation, and performance.
Mestre (teacher) Anderson Dias-Moreira, who began practicing Capoeira at the age of six in south-eastern Brazil, has been teaching since 2004. In 2020, he initiated free classes in Mozambique, Africa, driven by his belief in Capoeira’s power to bring peace and joy to people amidst life’s challenges. He now aims to cultivate a space for traditional Capoeira teachings in the US through his training program.
Cardozo plans to incorporate Capoeira training at The Watermill Center into her future durational performances, offering the East End community a taste of Brazilian culture through this workshop.
