On November 20, Alexandra Sachs will present the next stage of her investigation of performance tools and practice, titled SCHAU.

SCHAU is loosely inspired by the film A Chorus Line. Dancers audition for a Broadway production and must show their personality and individuality in additional to their acting and dance skills. Sachs’ piece, which features the performers Elke Luyten and Laia Fabre, uses the film only as a point of departure for a critical assessment of different ways of performing.SCHAU investigates the innumerable tools used by performers, from natural stage presence to explicit showmanship and burlesque. The artist is fascinated by the ubiquitous—and growing—ambiguity between real and artificial, authentic and deceitful, staged and sincere. SCHAU throws into question these oppositions and takes a deconstructive approach to performance, dissecting it and isolating specific movements, gestures and words at the actor’s disposal.

SCHAU was presented in part at Artist Building 110 on Governors Island this past June. Sachs realized the next stage of this choreographic work in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space Program.

Sachs will develop an evening-length performance with the material created through the LMCC Swing Space Program and The Watermill Center.
