The rules for electing U.S. presidents have serious flaws—even if we ignore the drawbacks of the Electoral College. In this lecture, Eric Maskin and Claude Grunitzky discuss these flaws and propose simple reforms that will correct them.

Eric Maskin is Professor of Economics and Mathematics at Harvard. He has made contributions to game theory, contract theory, social choice theory, political economy, and other areas of economics. He received his A.B. and Ph.D from Harvard and was a postdoctoral fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge University. He was a faculty member at MIT from 1977-1984, Harvard from 1985- 2000, and the Institute for Advanced Study from 2000-2011. Maskin rejoined the Harvard faculty in 2012. In 2007, he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics (with L. Hurwicz and R. Myerson) for laying the foundations of mechanism design theory.

Claude Grunitzky is the President and a member of the Board of Trustees at the Byrd Hoffman Water Mill Foundation, which oversees The Watermill Center. He is also the founder of TRACE and TRUE Africa, a media tech platform championing young African voices all over the world. In 2017, TRUE Africa was funded by Google’s Digital News Initiative. A graduate of London University and MIT where he was also a Sloan Fellow, Grunitzky is on the Board of Trustees at MASS MoCA and Humanity in Action.
